ABOUT THE ARTIST

Picture
KARLA NWEJE is a choreographer, performer, literary artist, and arts educator.  She holds a BFA in Dance Performance & Composition from Brooklyn College/CUNY.  As a literary artist, Karla is a published author and contributing writer to literary journals and anthologies.  She also writes and presents interactive workshops for youth.

After obtaining teaching credentials, Ms. Nweje worked as a NYC high school language arts teacher by day and a performer by night.  During this time, she intuitively used theater arts techniques to enhance the learning process in her classroom.  The positive results she witnessed affirmed her personal conviction that the arts are a vital component in the healthy, comprehensive development of our youth.

While continuing to choreograph, perform, and write, Ms. Nweje’s work also included service as a dance specialist in public high schools and as an instructor for dance studios and outreach programs.  Additionally, she has served as a coordinator for several arts and youth development organizations targeting under-served populations.

Since her arrival to the Twin Cities, Karla has served as a dance artist for Perpich Center for Arts Education’s ACE~Dance (Arts Courses for Educators) and Multicultural Voices programs and was an arts education coach for its ASAP (Arts & Schools As Partners) program.  She also served as a teaching artist and coach for Arts for Academic Achievement (MPS).  She has done on-camera projects, has produced several bodies of stage work, and continues to choreograph and write new material for students and for a broadening audience base.  She is a 2013 recipient of the Excellence in Educational Service Award (Ordway Center for Performing Arts) and is in her 9th season as a teaching artist and design team member for its Dance to Learn program.   She is on several teaching artist rosters throughout Minnesota, including COMPAS, The Givens Foundation for African American Literature, MN State Arts Board, The Cowles Center for Dance and the Performing Arts, VocalEssence's WITNESS School Program, and East Side Arts Council.  She is a regular presenter at arts and education conferences and retreats and was the keynote orator for NW Service Cooperative's 2014 Creativity Festival. Within the state of Minnesota and beyond, Ms. Nweje continues to cultivate partnerships across organizations, programs, and school districts to make quality arts experiences accessible to all learners.
